Lightning - Drag Racing Results

12.5's, baby! All three runs in the twelve's and set a new person best... The track was well prepped, especially considering how late in the year it is, and the fact this was just a plain old test'n'tune weekend. The 6lb lower pulley and new tune really shine, and the lowend is like never before! I'm really happy, obviously!!!

I REALLY need to get some of my best runs on camera :(
May 6, 2006
The Dodge Dakota boys were at it again, at the track in Sparta and Lightings were invited to join agian this year. I had just put the midpipes on, and was anxious to hit the track again. The weather was nice and I always have a blast hanging out with other go-fast truck guys, regardless of the badge on the front of the truck. I lost in the early brackets, but had fun anyway, so it was worth it.
Anyway, here are the particulars for each of the eight runs that I made:

I know, I know - opening day of the track and the prep will be crappy, right? Right. After two runs, I gace up - the rear end was wiggling all over the place, and while I had fun I wasn't going to run a good time and I don't think it was overly safe. Here are the results fromt he two runs I made:

It's the last chance for me to get to the track this year, so off I went. Cayuga was a little busier than I had expected, but I was able to get 5 runs in. I'm trying to learn how to lauch the Nittos, but was able to cut my best 60' and overal ET on the 3rd run. Go to the videos section, to see that race!

Back to the dragstrip for me, for the first time in '05! The weather was decent, and I was in the 12's 4/5 runs (see the chart below)... I had a good time, but the Goodyears are starting to complain. They're getting pretty bald, it's becoming difficult to launch on the belts and they may not be up to challenge of too many more track days. I've gotta start thinking about replacement tires, but today it's all about the 12's again!

Twelve's! Twelve's! Twelve's! All three runs in the twelve's... The track was well prepped, so the stock Goodyear F1's were able to grab traction pretty well. As a result, I saw my best 60' times, on all three runs. Even with my best 60' times, the mph went up a little, too. Even though I only made three runs, it was a great day at the track. For the first time, I was consistently into the twelve's, and I'm pumped!

I REALLY need to get some of my 12-second runs on camera :(
There were more visits to the track before this, including L'Fest, which I have yet to update...
April 24, 2004
The track finally opened, and I made it out, to see what the Apten Ported Eaton can do. I set a new best, on my first run, and was never able to get back into the twelve's afterwards. Basically, what these numbers tell me is that everything I thought I knew, has changed. My launch has gone to hell - I just haven't figured out how to get traction. The speed has gone up a good 2mph, which is indicative of increased power. So, the capabilities of the vehicle far exceed that of the driver, for now. I guess I'll have to keep trying, huh? :) Anyway, here are the results:

Twelve's! Twelve's! Twelve's! The weather was cool, and the air was dry... Great day for the track! There was a F150 extended cab there, with full Lightning gear (interior, body fx, and the full drive train), that was absolutely gorgeous. Goes by the name of SVT Steve... I ran against him, all day. He'd be a little quicker than me, than I'd be a touch quicker than him. It was cool, but I'm really happy to finally break into the twelve's!

More video tape here, I really gotta figure out what I'm gonna do about this...
August 23, 2003
Since I had some toys installed (thanks to Johnny Lightning), I've been anxious to go to the track, and see what the truck had in it. The weather was nice (temperature was around 78-80*) and I set a new personal best (see the chart below)... I had a great time, and my times have improved substantially. Run 3 was a write-off... I spun so bad on the launch I had to completely let off, and ease back into the gas. I still reeled in the late-80's Cougar, and passed him at the 1/8 mile marker. I won all but one of my races (Run 8 vs. a 80ish Corvette that ran a 13.2 to my 13.5), which I lost due to my poor 60 foot. The only downside is that traction got worse as the day went on. I finally saw a 1.95 60' which resulted in a 13.008 ET. So close, yet so far! Nine 1/1000's of a second away from a 12.xxx! If I had farted halfway down the track it would've provided the extra jolt needed to see a 12! Oh well, it gives ma something to shoot for, next time. With good weather, and another launch like that, I'll see 12's easy!

My g/f came with me, again, and was kind enough to video tape my runs, again - and got sunburned doing it. If I ever figure out how to make decent videos, that are still reasonable in file size, I'll post them..
April 27, 2003
First trip to the dragstrip this year, and it was a good one! The weather was nice (temperature was around 60*) and I set a new personal best (see the chart below)... I had a great time, and my times got better as the day went on. The only changes from the last time out were the removal of the hitch, and I installed Truck-Traks (traction bars). They've really helped out, and there is substantially less wheel spin on launch. I'm still on a learning curve, but progressively chopping away at the e.t. I know that with the right launch (1.9x 60') I can get a 13.3-13.4 out of the truck. Now, I'll just have to keep trying different things (tire pressure, launch rpm, pressure on the loud pedal), until I get it right.
Anyway, here are the particulars for each of the eight runs that I made:

October 27, 2002
Back to the dragstrip for me. The weather was cooler, and I set a new personal best (see the chart below)... I had a good time, and won every race I was in. I know, it's luck of the draw, really... But still a good feeling. Most of the races were vs. vehicles close to me - a Cobra R (think he missed a shift, didn't hear it, but he only ran a 14.3 against me - I saw some high 13's out of him later in the day), a mildly modded Eagle Talon Tsi, and a mint looking Chevelle SS (bone stock 396)...

My g/f did come with me, and I had her video tape my runs, again. She is learning how to use the video camera, as I (try to) learn how to launch the truck. The only problem is - she's learning quicker than I am... I do have videos, and will be putting them up in the near future. I seriously doubt I'll have the truck back to the track this year, so this will likely be the last update to this page for a couple of months...
September 28, 2002
I woke up early this morning, and felt how cool it was... Quickly to the computer, and checked the schedule for the drag strip. Test and Tune - Cool. So I jumped in the truck, and made the trek back to Cayuga (same track as last time), with hopes of some better times. The temperature when I got there was 16C (61F), and there was a slight breeze. While waiting in the lane, I met some cool people, two of which own Dodge Indy Rams. I ended up lining up against one of the guys, and produced the following results:

The only problem was the track was packed. I waited almost three hours, just to get my first run out. There were two separate crashes on the track, and at 4:30, still without a second run, I bailed, to make the 1.5 hour ride home. I spun the wheels pretty bad off the line (tires were at 33 psi), so I know I could've done better. I lowered the tire pressure in preparation for my second run, but never got to test it out.
So, for thirty bucks, I got one run in. Now that I broke into the thirteen's, and still feel there is more to be gained just by experience, I psyched, and ready for the next time I can go. I'll probably bring the g/f, to video tape, but I'll give her a tripod to use :) LOL
August 18, 2002
Well, I took the Lightning to the dragstrip (Toronto Motorsport Park) for the first time, August 18. I had a great time, and have been bitten by the bug. I suspect it won't be long until I go back. To be honest, though, I'm a little disappointed with the results. The temperature was 27C (81F), but with the humidex it felt like 31C (88F). The elevation is 550 feet above sea level. I know that heat and humidity can have an impact on the Lightning and the elevation equates to about 0.1 seconds, but still, I was really hoping to be in the thirteen's...

My g/f did come with me, and I had her video tape my runs, but she was unable to hold the camera straight for 14 seconds. The video is so bad, I don't see any point in putting it up.
I've been kicking myself since I got halfway home, because I completely forgot two things while at the track! I had my G-Tech sitting in the truck, and completely forgot that I had wanted to a) check the accuracy vs. the dragstrip timing, and b) wanted to see what my 0-60 time would be, with the track prep to help. Also, I never turned off the overdrive, on any of the 5 runs. I have heard that this can help a little :( and suspect I may have run a little faster (maybe got into the thirteen's as I had hoped), had I remembered.
